He digged on the site with the American archeologists decades ago! There is evidence of at least 3 diferent civilizations through the history of this site. Simply amazing! Joya de Ceren has been considered “the Pompei” of the Mayan sites, as it was covered with ashes by a nearby volcanic eruption. This unique site in all of Mesoamerica gives us a window to the Mayan farmer´s way of life, their architecture, diet, customs, religious beliefs, etc. Down town San Salvador & Boqueron volcano park. Let´s talk about the views to Lake Suchitlan and surrounding mountains along this road! Jaw-dropping! At Cinquera we´ll do a short visit to this 500 habitant tiny tiny little village. This war-historic location has a plaza with a couple of curious war monuments, we´ll interpret them and after having a little overall war historic briefing, we keep on going to Ilobasco, the “Pottery Capital” of El Salvador! At this artisan village we´ll visit the local cooperative, check out their workshop, and if the artists are working on the wheels…you might have a chance to play with clay and form a pot, shop and follow to one of the oldest old fashioned workshops in town. Seeing a modern and a traditional workshop in town. Getting close to mid day, we have a short 40min drive to Ocelot Turkey Mountain (Cojutepeque)! Known for delicious sausages, this town thrives with local commerce. Less than 1km away, the mountain that gives this town its name, is a sanctuary to the Virgin Of Fatima and a natural reserve for local wildlife. The mountain is also home to a citrus fruit farm and restaurant where we will have our lunch with a view to Ilopango crater lake. With satisfied bellies we´ll return to the Flower Bird City (Suchitoto) after lunch. Lake Ilopango “The end” of the Mayan culture in El Salvador´s territory… After the greatest eruption in our history, 460 after crist, a crater lake with 17km diameter was created. In the present is a paradisiac volcanic lake, ideal for scuba diving to rock formations, underwater hot springs, and the sunken virgin´s sanctuary. Also great location to spend a chilled morning on our fleet of kayaks or on boat! Enjoying lake views, local bird life and isolated beaches!
